Marcia Brown

A three-time winner of the Caldecott Medal and six-time winner of Caldecott Honors, Marcia Brown is a distinguished U.S. illustrator and author. A minister's daughter, born in 1918, she enrolled in the New York State College for Teachers in 1936, majoring in English and drama. She taught high school for three years before leaving for New York City to become a writer and illustrator of children's books.

Brown has created more than 30 children's books throughout a 50-year career. Her books contain spare texts, strong images, and experiment with such media as woodcuts, pen and ink, gouache, collage, pastels, watercolor, and linoleum.

In addition to the Caldecotts, Brown has been honored with the Regina Medal and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award.
