Eric Carle

Eric Carle, the man who revolutionized children's book illustrations, was born in New York, but grew up in Germany. He said he determined that he would become a bridge builder so he could build a bridge from Germany to the United States, where he wanted to return. After being educated in Stuttgart, he returned to the United States in 1952 and became a graphic designer for the New York Times.

In 1967, a writer who saw one of his ad illustrations asked him to illustrate Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? He did, and his career as an illustrator and children's book writer took off from there. His second book remains his most popular: The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
