Lucius Shepard
Lucius Shepard was a restless soul who traveled the globe and wandered through a series of unusual occupations before launching a writing career.
Born in 1947 in Virginia and raised in Florida, Shepard left home at age 15, hopping aboard a freighter for Ireland. He proceeded to live and work in Europe, North Africa, and Asia, holding such diverse jobs as a factory worker making cigarettes in Germany, a black market worker in Cairo, and a night club bouncer in Spain.
On returning to the United States, he attempted a stint at college, but was soon taking time off to go to Spain, Southeast Asia, Central America, and South America.
During the 1970s, in the midst of a cross-country trip from the East Coast to California, his car broke down in Detroit, forcing his wife and himself to find jobs to pay for repairs. Shepard joined a band and began playing rock throughout the Midwest.
He continued working odd jobs until he attended the Clarion Writers' Workshop at Michigan State University and began writing short stories at the age of 34. While he has primarily written fiction since that time, he did spend a two-year period as a freelance journalist in El Salvador.
In the 20 years since he's began writing, Shepard has been nominated for and won numerous science fiction and fantasy awards. He was nominated for a World Fantasy Award nine times and won once. He was nominated for five Hugos and won once. He was nominated for nine Nebulas and won once. He also won a John Campbell Award for best new author and was nominated for a Bram Stoker award.
