Vernor Vinge

Like many science fiction greats, Vernor Vinge is a man of many professions. An award-winning author, Vinge is also a mathematician and computer scientist. Those professions intermingle to give him many of his claims to fame-including the first fleshing out of a cyberspace-a concept that would be expanded upon by others such as William Gibson and Neal Stephenson.

Vinge explores the concept of technological singularity in his works-a concept that says technology is expanding exponentially, making it impossible to predict its effects.

Born in 1944 in Wisconsin, Vinge was raised in central Michigan. He began writing in the 60s and 70s and is a multiple Hugo Award winner. While he has written several novels, the majority of his work is in short stories and novellas. In 2002, Vinge retired from San Diego State University where he taught for 30 years to write full-time.
