Laura Ingalls Wilder Award
In 1954, Laura Ingalls Wilder was recognized by the American Library Association with an award that would ever after carry her name. The award is given to an author or illustrator who has made numerous and lasting contributions to children's literature. While the work must have been published in the United States-and at least some of it within the 25 years previous to giving the award-the committee giving the award does not take into account the citizenship of the nominee.
The committee reviews an author's entire body of work, looking for whether some or all of the books are exceptional and likely to become classics. They also look at whether the books have established a new genre or trend amongst children's literature.
Between the years 1960 and 1980, it was awarded every five years. From 1980 to 2001, it was given every three years. As of 2001, it will be given every two years.
Award: Bronze medal with a girl's head on it.
Administered by: Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association
